Tanzania has a unique position for Agri trade in the region

Tanzania is East Africa’s food forte. That is how it was seen during the African Green Revolution Forum (AGRF) 2021 Summit in Nairobi held between 7-10 September, which sought to highlight pathways to recovery and a resilient food systems.

Sadly, President Uhuru Kenyatta, who was hosting the summit, which promotes inclusive agriculture, had to declare drought in Kenya a national disaster. The declaration paved way for the treasury in East Africa’s largest economy, to make mitigation measures and assist over two million Kenyans severely affected by drought.

Kenya declares drought a national disaster

Nairobi. President of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta yesterday declared the drought ravaging parts of the country a national disaster.

The declaration comes just a month after the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) said an estimated 2.1 million Kenyans face acute food shortage and would be in urgent need of assistance in the coming six months.

This was a rise of more than 600,000 people from the 1.4 million Kenyans the government in April said faced hunger due to the drought and the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

These are Burkina Faso in West Africa's Sahel region, northeastern Nigeria, South Sudan and Yemen.


20,000 Kenyans Face Eviction in Land Dispute With Govt

The Agriculture Development Corporation (ADC) is involved in a scuffle with residents of Kaskini, Kilifi County.

A report by the Nation on Monday, June 14 stated that the government parastatal is claiming ownership of 900 Acres which the residents state to have been given to them by the government in 2006.

The dispute began in 2014, when ADC laid claim to the land which had been occupied by locals for decades.

The African Forest Landscape Restoration Initiative (AFR100) gathered representatives from 31African Countries, the private sector, national and international organizations, and youth ambassadors in Kigali, Rwanda, to participate in its Fifth Annual Partnership Meeting.

They have a common goal: tobeginrestoring100 million hectares of land by2030.The hybrid event was a first of its kind for the partnership and featured thelaunch of a documentary film,AFR100 Presents: The Grand African Green Up,which highlights local action for restoring biodiversity, food systems, and theclimate.

Angola: Agrolive Invests Akz 100 Million in Agricultural Development

Longonjo — The agricultural project "AGROLIVE" is investing 100 million Kwanzas (Akz) in mechanization and promotion of maize and bean crops in the municipality of Lépi, Longonjo (Huambo).

The information was given this Monday to the press by the director general of AGROLIVE, Inocêncio Katiavala, pointing out that 62 direct jobs are expected to be created in the agricultural year 2020/21.

With this, he explained, a production of 500 tons of maize and 100 tons of beans is expected.
