Flexible grazing strategies for sustainable rangeland resources management

To strengthen institutional arrangement that link national developing agencies dealing with rangeland rehabilitation and management with the end users (pastoralists and livestock keepers), representatives from ICARDA, Office de l’Elevage et des Pâturages (OEP), and Tunisia's General Directorate for Forestry (DGF), farmers and pastoralists were invited to a day-long workshop on June 6th, 2022, where participants discussed a flexible approach to grazing management to adopt a new flexible grazing management procedure when implementing gdel on rangelands.

In vitro fermentation profile and methane production of Kikuyu grass harvested at different sward heights

Highly digestible forages are associated with an in vitro low-methane (CH4) rumen fermentation profile and thus the possibility of reducing CH4 emissions from forage-based systems. We aimed to assess the in vitro ruminal fermentation profile, including CH4 production, of the top stratum of Kikuyu grass (Cenchrus clandestinus - Hochst. ex Chiov) harvested at different sward heights (10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 cm). Herbage samples (incubating substrate) were analyzed for their chemical composition, in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD), and morphological components.

Status of integrated crop-livestock research in the mixed farming systems of the Global South: a scoping study

Mixed farming systems (MFS) are the main food source and exist across almost all agroecological regions in the Global South. A systematic scoping review was conducted to identify the status of integrated crop-livestock research in MFS of the Global South. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses protocol was used to identify 210 studies (excluding reviews) addressing productivity, resilience, challenges, opportunities, and perceptions of integrating crops and livestock in the Global South from the Scopus and Web of Science database.

The session explored the challenges facing pastoralism in West and Central Africa, emphasizing the pressures exerted by climate change, demographic growth, privatization, and the expansion of farmland. Discussions highlighted how collective grazing practices, which accommodate the region’s ecological variability, have been sidelined in favor of privatized resources and sedentary livestock systems that prioritize agricultural interests. Despite their suitability for local ecosystems, communal grazing methods struggle for recognition within current public policies.
