A collaborative collective action underway to highlight the land rights of the rural poor in the climate change agenda

The rural poor who have weak or no land tenure rights are among the most vulnerable to the direct effects of climate change, both because insecure land tenure reduces the incentives and capacities to take good care of the land to mitigate /adapt to the effects of climate change, and because without secure tenure rights, disasters can easily lead to land loss and migration, also through document loss and land grabbing.

Land Portal Publishes New State of Land Information Report for Malawi

During the colonial era, data and information was largely treated as confidential in Malawi. According to Mambulasa (2016), many statutes in Malawi dating back to colonial times promote government secrecy and the withholding of public information. This has resulted in lingering land administration and management challenges. Land-related problems have been a constant feature of Malawian society, including the pre-colonial, colonial and post independence period starting in 1964.

Land tenure security is the protection people can have from the state that their land parcels will not be bullied away from them by vested interests through unfair evictions. 

It is the opposite of land tenure insecurity.

There are many forms of land documentation. This includes land titles (a legal document that outlines a person's rights) and deeds (legal document of transfer of land/title from one person to another). 

Sierra Leone passes globally unprecedented legislation related to climate and the environment

Freetown, August 8, 2022 – Sierra Leone’s Parliament has passed two groundbreaking bills that transform communities’ ability to protect their land rights and the environment. The new legislation serves as a model for the rest of the world.

 

Passed by unanimous votes, the Customary Land Rights and National Land Commission Acts will, among other things:
