"While ample evidence documents that urban children generally have better nutritional status than their rural counterparts, recent research suggests that urban malnutrition is on the rise. The environment, choices, and opportunities of urbanites differ greatly from those of rural dwellers' from employment conditions to social and family networks to access to health care and other services.

North Arcot and the green revolution

North Arcot district which embraces the study region, lies in the northwest of Tamil Nadu state. It is a relatively densely populated region; in 1981 the population density was 357 persons per square kilometer of land. It is also a relatively poor region within India. For example, in 1980/81 the district's net domestic product (NDP) at factor cost was Rs 3,285 million, or Rs 750 (US$95) per capita. This compared with a national average in 1983 of US$260 per capita (World Bank 1986).

In this study we set out to quantify the effects of the green revolution on the North Arcot region, in both the villages and the towns. For this task we had available a unique set of data obtained from household surveys undertaken in 1973/74, 1982/83, and 1983/84, which together span an era of change in the region's paddy technology.

Exploring local perceptions of climate change impact and adaptation in rural Bangladesh

This paper reports on findings from 30 focus group discussions and 30 key informant interviews conducted in 12 districts of Bangladesh in May 2012. The discussions and interviews draw attention to perceptions of climate change and how climate-related trends influence people’s lives, both directly and indirectly. The findings also identify how people adapt to and cope with these changes. This paper aims to improve our understanding of local people’s perceptions of these changes, explore the ways they are affected by them, and how well they are adapting to them.

Local governance and public goods provision in rural China

In developing countries, identifying the most effective community-level governance structure is a key issue and, increasingly, empirical evaluation of the effects of democratization on the provision of local public goods is needed. Since the early 1990s, tens of thousands of villages in rural China have held local-government elections, providing a good opportunity to investigate the effect of democratization on the level of public goods provision.

In a predominantly agrarian region, development of the nonfarm economy is materially affected by the development of the agricultural sector. Agriculture supplies food, raw materials, and surplus labor for agro-industry. Agriculture also supplies the financial resources necessary to the organization of nonfarm firms. These resources can be mobilized through the terms of trade, through the savings and investments of both farmers and agricultural traders, and through direct and indirect taxation. Furthermore, demand from the agricultural sector stimulates nonfarm activity.

A social accounting matrix of the regional economy, 1982/83

This chapter uses an estimated social accounting matrix (SAM) to provide a detailed quantitative description of the North Arcot study region in 1982/83. The SAM framework provides a consistent, comprehensive, and detailed picture of the transactions in an economy. Production activities, commodities, factors, government, households, and other institutions can all be accommodated, and the pattern in which incomes are distributed takes its place alongside the sources of income generation.

Migration and the rural-urban continuum

This paper explores the diversity of the experience of migrants to rural, peri–urban, and urban areas using a unique longitudinal data set from the Philippines. In 2003 and 2004, the Bukidnon Panel Study followed up with 448 families in rural Mindanao who were previously interviewed in 1984/85 by the International Food Policy Research Institute and the Research Institute for Mindanao Culture, Xavier University, and surveyed both a sample of their offspring living in the same area as well as a sample of those who had moved away to different locations.

Ethiopia supports one of the largest livestock populations in all of Africa (Alemu et al. 2008). In fact, the livestock sector accounts for 19 percent of national GDP, and as much as 40 percent of agricultural GDP (FAO 2004). At a micro level, it has been estimated that livestock supports the livelihoods of about 80 percent of the rural population (FAO 2004).

Risk and ambiguity preferences and the adoption of new agricultural technologies: Evidence from field experiments in rural India

Advances in agricultural development have largely been a direct result of increased usage of new technologies. Among other important factors, farmers’ perceptions of risks associated with the new technology as well as their ability or willingness to take risks greatly influences their adoption decisions. In this paper we conduct a series of field experiments in rural India in order to measure preferences related to risk, potential loss, and ambiguity.

The impact of technological change in rice production on food consumption and nutrition

Technological change, such as the replacement of traditional with modern crop varieties and introduction of irrigation, has been effective in increasing the yields and production of various crops— notably rice and wheat—as well as incomes of farmers in developing countries (Pinstrup-Andersen 1982; Pinstrup-Andersen and Hazell 1985; Lipton 1989). However, the impact on food consumption and nutrition is poorly documented.
