Republic of Madagascar : Tourism Sector Study

July, 2013
Madagascar

Madagascar has an impressive array of
biodiversity, natural beauty and cultural resources to
support tourism. Surprisingly, of the 200,000 visitors the
island per year, only about 60,000 come expressly for
tourism, the rest traveling for other reasons but which
could include some tourism activity. Madagascar has the
potential to welcome many more tourists if the sector's
growth is well planned in a broad, multi-sectoral way -

April, 2016
Vietnam

The objective of this study is to analyse the impact of various types of
government spending on growth and poverty reduction, using provincial level data over
the last decade. Government spending reduces poverty through many channels such as
agricultural growth and improved nonfarm employment. We will try to capture all these
different effects in the analysis if the data allow. This paper opens with a review of
Vietnam’s economic reforms and growth over the past decade. We then sketch Vietnam’s

Toward an Understanding of Household Vulnerability in Rural Kenya

June, 2013
Kenya

Considerations of risk and vulnerability
are key to understanding the dynamics of poverty. This study
conceives vulnerability as expected poverty and illustrates
a methodology to empirically assess household vulnerability
using pseudo panel data derived from repeated cross sections
augmented with historical information on shocks. Application
of the methodology to data from rural Kenya shows that in
1994 rural households faced on average a 40 percent chance

Shocks and Social Protection : Lessons from the Central American Coffee Crisis, Volume 1, Synthesis of Findings and Implications for Policy

June, 2012
Central America

A major objective of this report is to provide a deeper, more policy relevant understanding of the welfare impacts of the coffee crisis - including the effects of the crisis on household income, consumption, poverty, as well as on basic human development outcomes, such as education and child nutrition. To do this, the study has generated a body of new empirical evidence, drawing from an unusually rich collection of household survey data from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.

Dominican Republic - Poverty Assessment : Poverty in a High-Growth Economy, 1986-2000, Volume 1. Main Report

August, 2013
Dominican Republic

Since its recovery of macroeconomic
stability in 1991, the Dominican Republic has experienced a
period of notable economic growth. Poverty has declined in
the 1990s. Nevertheless, a segment of the population-mainly
in rural areas-does not seem to have benefited from this
growth. Poverty in this country in 1998 is less than that of
other countries if one adjusts for the level of economic
development. The principal poverty characteristics are the

Tajikistan

The primary purpose of this paper is to update the Poverty Assessment from June, 2000, and to give an assessment of the poverty situation in Tajikistan in 2003 and changes since 1999. The paper is part of an on-going program of work conducted in close cooperation with the Government, based on the Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper and the ongoing work of the PRSP Expert Group. The work program includes the production of a series of relatively short analytical papers rather than one full poverty assessment every four years or so.

resources including major oil and gas deposits, a variety of
solid minerals, good agricultural land, a well developed
industrial base, an extensive banking system, a large labor

determined by the Government in consultation with a core
group of donors at a workshop in Brussels organized by the
European Commission in November 2000. The Government
suggested reviewing public expenditures at the regional
level, starting with three regions. This public expenditure
review (PER) marks the first explicit attempt at Regional
