Leveraging spatial technology for agricultural intensification to address hunger in Ghana

December, 2022
Ghana

YouthMappers are using open geospatial tools in support of initiatives seeking to achieve SGD 2 Zero Hunger and SDG 1 No Poverty in Northern Ghana. Students and researchers designed survey questions and a field data collection workflow using simple but cost-effective technology to catalogue a database of farmers, properly demarcate farm sizes, and give farmers, in particular impoverished women, the opportunity to project farm yields and increase the efficiency of their output.

Exploring Gender Differences in the Role of Trait Preferences among Stakeholders in the Rice Value Chain in Ghana

December, 2022
Ghana

This paper examines the gendered trait preferences for rice and their role in the adoption of improved rice varieties among men and women rice farmers in Ghana. Four hundred rice farm households and 261 consumers were surveyed across 20 communities using a simple random sampling technique. Kendall’s coefficient of concordance, Tobit, and the multivariate probit regressions were used in the analyses. The results show differences in preferences for cooking quality traits and postharvest traits among men and women farmers.

Understanding the role of push and pull factors on agricultural land expansion: A case study of Adaba and Adiyo district, Ethiopia

December, 2022
Ethiopia

Understanding the human-forest relationship is key to sustainable development and forest management. The increase of agricultural land expansion mainly focuses on satisfying the competing interest amongst stakeholders and rural households, which neglects the impact of forest losses. The study looked at rural households' farmland expansion dynamics in Adaba (Oromia Region) and Adiyo, located in the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and People's Region (SNNR) of Ethiopia.

Food security's broken link: The misalignment of stakeholder priorities in agriculture and nutrition in Vihiga County, Kenya

December, 2022
Kenya

Global food security will exist when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life. Today, about 2 billion of the 7.96 billion people on Earth are food insecure. Food insecurity is still a challenge in Kenya despite different sectors' interventions in nutrition and agriculture.

Study on Enhancing Capacities of Extension and Advisory Services (EAS) in Using Data and Information Available Through Digital Platforms and Applications in Odisha, India

December, 2022
India

Digital Extension and Advisory Services (EAS) have evolved to deliver more need-based advisories at scale ranging from broadcast media to Artificial Intelligence (AI)-backed applications. Over the years, rapid growth in the number of digital EAS providers has seen the use of varied channels to deliver similar advisories that are generic. Very few of these have succeeded in providing content that is relevant to a specific situation or problem farmers are dealing with.

Exploring and analysing practices and pathways to improve resource use efficiency of crop-livestock farming systems in North-western Bangladesh

December, 2022
Bangladesh

As the global population continues to grow, the urgency of addressing food sovereignty challenges becomes increasingly apparent. Bangladesh, being a densely populated country, encounters significant hurdles in livestock production sectors the high population density leads to a substantial demand for food, resulting in increased resource requirements. This study aimed to explore and analyse new pathways and practices to improve resource use efficiency of smallholder crop-livestock farms in northwest Bangladesh.

Challenges and opportunities to scaling smallholder mechanization in Kenya, Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe

December, 2022

As governments heighten the drive to mechanize agriculture, critical information is required on (i) existing mechanization options, (ii) barriers and challenges, (iii) opportunities for scaling and effective demand for mechanization. This paper combines quantitative and qualitative surveys to help elucidate on some of these key issues in Kenya, Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe where mechanization is part of national policy priorities. Data were collected through Qualitative surveys involving 484 participants in focus group discussions and 109 key informants.

A meta-analysis of social, economic, and institutional bottlenecks, barriers, and opportunities to more inclusive small and medium agribusiness in the ESA Region: a synthesis report

December, 2022
Global

This report summarizes the meta-analysis findings on the social, economic, and institutional bottlenecks, barriers, and opportunities to more inclusive small and medium agribusiness in the ESA region. It serves as a link between the visible integration of GESI focus in WP1 and its interventions. The GESI framework1 brings about inclusive and scalable agribusiness innovations through targeted GESI support to UU ESA work packages 1-6.

Global hotspots of climate change adaptation and mitigation in agriculture

December, 2022
Global

As countries prioritize climate action under the Paris Agreement, determining the overlap in agricultural areas requiring both adaptation and mitigation (A&M) interventions could lead to more efficient use of resources and support for farmers. Here, we identify global priorities for A&M by evaluating global datasets on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and climate hazards related to agriculture. We show that joint A&M hotspots cover <23% of global agricultural emissions and include 52% of the areas with significant climate hazards.

Policy Think Tank (PTT): institutional visit report on policy research and agroecology farming in Vietnam

December, 2022
Laos
