The object of this Act is to ensure that land in Solomon Islands is developed and used in accordance with properly considered policies that are formulated on adequate information. There shall be a Town and Country Planning Board in each Province and in Honiara. The Minister may by notice published in the Gazette declare any area to be a Local Planning Area.

The Act regulates inheritance and granting of administration of estates of deceased persons and contains rules regarding administration of such estates. The provisions of this Act shall not apply to or in relation to customary land.

This Act provides for various matters relating to wildlife and forestry including: functions of the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands, acquisition of land and rights, natural heritage areas, nature reserves and refuges, protection of flora, wild birds and wild animals, and regulation and control of wildlife dealing.

This Act consists of 66 sections divided into 6 Parts: Preliminary provisions (I); Application of fundamental principles of the National Land Policy (II); Transfers and hazard land (III); Village lands (IV); Dispute settlement (V); Miscellaneous provisions (VI). The President may transfer any area of village land to general or reserved land for public interest (sect. 4).

This Act provides rules relative to the relationship and contractual agreement between landlord and tenant and makes provision for other matters relating to such relationship including resolution of disputes, the control of rent and prescribes offences.Part I contains interpretations.

The present Regional Act, in compliance with the provisions contained in Act No. 183 of 1989 and Act No. 36 of 1994: (a) lays down rules governing the establishment of basins; (b) provides for the delimitation of areas of soil protection; (c) defines the procedures to be followed to adopt river basin plans; (d) aims at the protection and preservation of water resources.

This Chapter provides in respect of certain matters relative to the sale, gift, exchange, or any other method of disposal of land. There is created a Land Commission which shall endeavour to prevent the monopolistic ownership of land and undesired alienations of communal lands by those charged with the management and control thereof.

This Law encourages young people to become farmers by setting provisions regarding special taxation policy for agricultural land, especially for inherited agricultural land.

These amendments and contemporary changes to the Native Lands Ordinance and the Magistrates’ Ordinance, are part of institutional strengthening of the lands and survey work particularly for South Tarawa. The amendments are introduced in order to implement the fairer and more certain settling of dealings with land by owners, lessees, neighbours and purchasers.
