This brochure provides an overview of the Global Programme Responsible Land Policy (GPRLP) implemented by the German Development Cooperation Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). It points out the relevance of land rights for reducing hunger and conflicts as well as the potential for achieving environmental, social and economic development.
This brochure presents the approach and core activities of GIZ Global Program on Responsible Land Policy (GPRLP). The GPRLP is active in Benin, Ethiopia, Laos, Madagascar, Paraguay, Peru and Uganda. In each country, a context specific approach in line with the global GPRLP concept aims at improving the access to land as a core condition for combating poverty and hunger in rural areas for specific population groups, particularly women and socially marginalised groups.

Cooperation has focused on sustainable development of the food, agriculture and fisheries sectors, while<p></p>ensuring the efficient and sustainable use of natural resources. FAO’s support also focuses on the achievement of value added in<p></p>the priority areas identified by Oman.
Land, fisheries, forests and other natural resources provide a basis for livelihoods and social, cultural and religious practices. However, most people in rural areas in developing countries do not have any form of documentation to protect their land and natural resources rights, which puts their livelihoods and consequently their food and nutrition security are at risk. Secure tenure rights promote responsible investment in agriculture that could increase productivity and enhance food security and nutrition.
Since Comoros joined the Organization in 1977, a variety of interventions have been delivered across the food and agriculture sector. Assistance has included capacity building, institutional strengthening and policy formulation as well as direct support to development projects. Current cooperation efforts are geared towards increasing agricultural production, particularly food products, and protecting natural resources – with an emphasis on agroforestry development. Strengthening agricultural data collection and information systems is another priority area.
FAO and Namibia have had an established partnership for more than 25 years. The most important objectives of the FAO<p></p>in Namibia are to help eliminate hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition; to make agriculture, forestry and fisheries more<p></p>productive and sustainable; and to reduce rural poverty. In Namibia, FAO supports the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry<p></p>in the development of programmes that will lead to sustainable food security, nutrition and the eradication of poverty.
FAO has been operational in Sierra Leone since 1978. Since then, targeted interventions have greatly helped to improve<p></p>food security and agricultural practices in the country. Today, FAO continues to be an important provider of technical<p></p>support, in collaboration with other UN agencies, NGOs, civil society and rural communities.
