    FAO has a long history of partnership with the countries of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), providing policy advice, analysis and technical assistance in agriculture, livestock, fisheries, forestry, natural resources management and food security in its commitment to support resilient livelihoods and enhance food security. FAO collaborates with these countries at a global level, as well as at a regional level through a number of regional initiatives, and at a country level via the country programming framework agreed upon with national authorities.

    This publication describes the experience of a number of transition countries in Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union with crafting regulatory frameworks for irrigation water users’ organizations. It also seeks to distil a number of key regulatory requirements. As a result, this study serves as a design/drafting manual for policymakers and for drafters of legislation on water users’ organizations.

    Towns and cities are growing rapidly in developing countries. This process is often accompanied by high levels of poverty and hunger, leading many urban dwellers to engage in farming activities to help satisfy their food needs. Policy makers need to recognize this reality and actively seize the opportunities offered by urban agriculture.

    The recently released Forest Resources Assessment 2000 (FRA 2000) was based on an intensive, five-year effort carried out by FAO in cooperation with national forestry agencies from nearly every country of the world, a large number of research centres and academic institutions, and a number of international, regional and non-governmental organizations.

    This report presents the results of an extra budgetary project which analyses similarities and common approaches in European national forest legislation. The forest laws of 23 countries have been examined in order to find out whether provisions are made to put into practice the following three legal issues: (1) reforestation obligations after logging through final cutting or loss of forest cover due to fire and natural calamities, (2) regulations concerning public access to forests and (3) public use of non-wood forest products occurring on forest land.

    Perhaps the most important socio-economic and political development in Europe between the time of ETTS IV and that of ETTS V was the start of the process of transition for the former centrally planned economies to a market economy system.     Recognizing the importance of the services provided by forests and trees to urban dwellers, the Collaborative Partnership on Forests proposed that the theme for the 2018 International Day of Forests would be “Forests and Sustainable Cities”. To mark this occasion and promote the widespread adoption of “green” strategies for dealing with urban challenges, FAO invited the mayors of 15 different sized cities from various regions around the world to present their experiences with trees and forests and to show how this green infrastructure has helped address urban challenges.

    The private property in Albania was reduced for 50 years and became mainly public. The ownership rights were
    insignificant for individuals or private institutions that asked for land and other uses of space. Except excomunist
