Sri Lanka: New land policy to ensure the land rights of the people - President assures

President Maithripala Sirisena said that he will fulfill the obligation of eliminating poverty from the country under his regime as previous leaders of the country fulfilled their significant responsibilities towards the country and the nation during their respective regimes


He made these observations on Friday (30) participating in a ceremony held in Urubokka, Matara to distribute 4000 Ranbima land deeds to the people in the Pasgoda Divisional Secretariat.

RIO DE JANEIRO (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Maria Valdenice Nukini believes it's her duty to protect her ancestral territory in northern Brazil and raise awareness of the role indigenous communities play in protecting nature.


That's why she recently traveled 4,700 kilometers from her isolated reserve in the northern state of Acre to Rio de Janeiro to protest oil and gas exploration that may take place near her community, located on the border with Peru.

KATHMANDU (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Gyalgen Lama was a third-generation tenant farmer in Nepal's Sindhupalchok district, eking out a living from growing millet on a small piece of land that he could only dream of owning.


That is until a land rights group helped to make his dream a reality.

The Government is finalising a draft Bill to amend legislation governing land registration and ownership.


Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, said amendments will be made to the Registration of Titles, Cadastral Mapping and Tenure Clarification (Special Provisions) Act, to reflect a more culturally relevant legislation.
