Rights groups criticise Ivory Coast over cocoa farmer evictions

Rights groups have accused Ivory Coast authorities of failing to provide a minimum level of support when they evicted tens of thousands of illegal cocoa farmers from a national park, leaving them vulnerable and putting pressure on local communities.


The government rejected the criticism on Friday.

City Hall said villagers affected by the development project of the Overseas Cambodia Investment Corporation (OCIC) in Phnom Penh’s Chroy Changvar district would have two months to claim the certificate of land policy before it would stop assuming responsibility for losses, according to a statement released yesterday.

Women across Africa have been mobilised to call on leaders on the continent to address land rights issues as one way of achieving sustainable development.

The call comes at time when women in rural areas of Africa are seen as having no piece of land, a development that has brought hiccups on food production on the continent.
