The FAO Legal Office provides in-house counsel in accordance with the Basic Texts of the Organization, gives legal advisory services to FAO members, assists in the formulation of treaties on food and agriculture, for which the Director-General acts as Depositary, publishes legal studies and maintains a database (FAOLEX) of national legislation and international agreements concerning food and agriculture (including fisheries, forestry and water).

Regional Law No. 321 “On land-use planning activity”.

This Regional Law regulates relations in the sphere of land-use planning and, in particular, territorial planning of urban areas with the consideration of ecological factors and urban zoning. It establishes plenary powers of regional administration and local government in the aforesaid sphere. Land-use planning shall be carried out in accordance with territorial planning schemes and authorized types of land tenure within urban areas. The scope of land-use planning shall be sustainable development of urban areas.

This Regional Law transfers to the competence of local government in rural areas the following issues: (a) water supply, sewerage and heating; (b) participation in the prevention of outbreak of natural and technological disasters, and mitigation of the consequences thereof; (c) conservation and promotion of the objects of cultural heritage; (d) management of domestic waste; and (e) management of protected areas of local significance.

Introductory Ordinance on environmental impact assessment.

The present Ordinance lays down provisions relating to the assessment of environmental impact. The text deals with the following matters: tasks of the Environment Office in the Canton of Zurich, tasks of the Planning Authorities, issue of building authorizations, land use planning, special provisions for certain infrastructures.
