Seed is life and can be a source of empowerment and disempowerment for women and men farmers. In this study, to close the gender gaps in seed, the Community Enterprises Development Organization, the Alliance of Bioversity and CIAT and the National Agricultural Research Organization developed a seed credit model available to men and women belonging to farmer groups. A mixed method was used to collect information from two districts in central Uganda on how the seed credit model reconstructed access, use, control and resulting benefits.

The report details the establishment of a Living Lab for People (LL4P) in La Montañita, Colombia, as part of the Low-Emission Food Systems (Mitigate +) initiative, which seeks to transform food systems and address climate change impacts. The LL4P focuses on empowering key stakeholders, particularly women, youth, and marginalized groups, to enhance their capacity to implement low-emission sociotechnical innovations in the food system, emphasizing cattle/dairy and cacao value chains.

This report aims to explore the intersection of gender and social inclusion, with a focus on the challenges and opportunities faced by women and youth in the agribusiness sector. It examines the ways in which gender norms and stereotypes shape social inclusion, and how exclusionary practices can perpetuate gender-based inequalities. The report draws on the gender analysis studies, baseline surveys and positive case study examples from diverse settings to highlight the key issues and strategies for promoting Gender and Social Inclusion (GESI) in the agribusiness sector.

Women and men value chain actors in low-income countries assess and choose varieties, animal breeds, or strains according to a multitude of factors, such as local agroecological conditions, production and consumption habits, and seed availability and accessibility. Continuous changes in the ecological, economic, and political contexts shape women’s and men’s day-to-day social interactions as well as their livelihood options and can create new needs for specific breeding products.

Voluntary Sustainability Systems (VSS) are varied in their commitments, actions and performances on gender equality. But as more VSS seek to address gender inequalities in agri-food value chains, the timing is ripe to reflect on existing evidence to inform future strategies. A recent evidence review sought to understand if and how VSS can support women’s full and effective participation and leadership in decision-making in agri-food value chains.

The AICCRA project, led by IITA recently introduced some climate smart Agricultural Innovations and Climate information services to help improve upon the farming activities and livelihoods of farmers in some selected communities in Ghana. Innovations such as the use of improved seeds, proper soil and nutrient management practices and integration of climatic data into decision making were introduced to farmers in five agro-ecological zones cutting across six regions in Ghana.

This report elaborates on the methodology to source and screen a pipeline of high CSA impact economically and environmentally sustainable business models (SMEs) from diverse sources, prioritizing women-led SMEs, in Africa that can be linked to innovative investment solutions.

This research assessed the dissemination methods of RiceAdvice, the factors influencing farmers' decisions to use, and its impacts on rice yield, farmers' income, food consumption score, and estimated greenhouse gas emissions in Mali. A total of 95,749 farmers, including 34,470 women (36%), benefited from RiceAdvice recommendations and were assisted by 120 young service providers in implementing these recommendations on their fields. Farmers' decisions to use RiceAdvice recommendations were influenced by formal education, farm size, and membership in farmers' organizations.

This study analysed the digital platform established by the AICCRA project to disseminate climate information services in Mali. In total, 233,000 farmers of which 38% are women had access to CIS through the digital platforms. On average, farmers having access to CIS through the digital platform had an increase in their yield by 705 kg/ha, income by 345,288 XOF/ha (575 USD/ha) and food consumption score by 2.
