For rural women and men, land is often the most important household asset for supporting agricultural production and providing food security and nutrition. Evidence shows that secure land tenure is strongly associated with higher levels of investment and productivity in agriculture – and therefore with higher incomes and greater economic wellbeing. Secure land rights for women are often correlated with better outcomes for them and their families, including greater bargaining power at household and community levels, better child nutrition and lower levels of gender-based violence.

Latvia

Land consolidation and land exchange are two important measures that can be used to improve the spatial structure of farm holdings. Unfortunately, land cannot be consolidated and exchanged in all villages of a given area simultaneously, due to economic, technical, and social considerations. Instead, an analysis has to be carried out, which allows one to rank the villages with regard to how urgently they need consolidation and exchange of land.

Journal Articles & Books
December, 2015

This paper aims to demonstrate the geographical range of farmland lease contracts through a field study of two large individual farmers in the Nihari district of Ibaraki Prefecture. The distribution pattern of farm fields and landowners is analyzed by the unit of community in both aspects of where the landowners reside, and where they own their farmland. The result of the study shows that fields of both farmers are distributed across 5 to 9 communities, and landowners reside across 6 to 14 communities including other villages.

Contract law and wind energy on farms.

Journal Articles & Books
December, 2010

Landowners may approach or may be approached by a wind development company to contract a portion of their land for a wind farm. Wind farms now produce 2% of electric energy needs. Some believe wind energy could provide 20% of our electrical needs. Touted as 'green' energy, wind farms have received tax incentives to build. But wind farms require two of a landowner's assets: wind and an access to land for turbines and transmission wire placement. As in any contractual arrangements, both parties must understand the terms of the contract and the pitfalls of the contract.
