Factors driving the demand for livestock products in the developing countries are primarily population growth, urbanisation and income growth. These factors are expected to continue to fuel the increase in milk and meat consumption in the next millennium, creating a veritable livestock revolution. This paper looks into the value of food consumption increases for meat, milk, fish and major cereals (1970-1995). it illustrates total meat consumption and per capita meat consumption by country; cereals used as feed by major region; and projected real prices, 2020.

Examines post-drought rehabilitation policies to aid recovery in livestock production and crop production, and the effects of drought on livestock and farming communities. Discusses the role played by reserves in mitigating a population's vulnerability to drought; and the macro-economic implications of a drought induced loss of livestock for the government budget, domestic markets and external trade. Investigates the likely speed of recovery in the abscence of outside intervention. Presents materials from case studies to show the nature of costs and returns involved.

Presents workshop papers & discussion summaries on the development of low-level aerial survey techniques and presents applications to livestock, wildlife and land-use surveys. Reviews survey designs and sampling procedures as well as problems of bias, levels, from ground survey to satellite imagery; along w. recommendations for further research and cooperation.

This volume contains an executive summary of papers and the discussions on them as well as the reports of working groups and the recommendations of the Roundtable on Livestock Development strategies for Low Income Countries. In addition to the executive summary there is a Keynote paper and two other background papers, two papers on issues, constraints and opportunities for livestock development and five papers on options for increasing livestock's contribution from the major production systems.

In sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), the increasing competition for water between various sectors is aggravated by growing demands for water, climate change and environmental degradation. One of the major consumers of water is livestock keeping, which is an important livelihood strategy for smallholder farmers in Africa. The water consumption for livestock production is currently increasing with the growing demands for livestock products. On the other hand, current low returns from livestock, limit its contribution to livelihoods, threaten environmental health and aggravate local conflicts.
