The purpose of this Act is to preserve the environment in Svalbard and in particular to protect wilderness, landscape elements, flora, fauna and cultural heritage. The Act shall apply to the entire land area of Svalbard and its waters within the territorial limit. The Act consists of 103 sections divided into 10 Chapters.The Act defines the environmental protection authorities for Svalbard. Protected areas may be established for the protection of habitats, ecosystems, the wilderness or area of natural or historical value.

Protection and Preservation of Cultural Heritage Regions Law (Law No. 9/98).

The purpose of this Law is to protect and preserve cultural heritage regions form deterioration due to natural disasters or from man made destruction. The Law consists of 9 Chapters divided into 30 sections.The Ministry of Culture shall designate the following zones to be cultural heritage regions: ancient monumental zones, ancient site zones, and protected and preserved zones (Chapter III).

This Act makes provision, in 23 Chapters, for the management and conservation of forest resources of Liberia, defines ownership rights and other rights in forests, regulates commercial and other use of forests resources, provides for the protection of the environment and wildlife in forests, regulates the trade in forest products and provides for various other matters relative to forestry and wildlife.The Act defines the principles of forest management and conservation to be undertaken by the Forestry Development Authority.

State Land and River Reserves Act (Cap. 228).

This Act makes provision for the management and alienation of State land, for the appointment of forest rangers and for the protection of State lands and River Reserves.State land may be alienated by grant, sale or lease. State land may be sold by the President, with the exception of River Reserves belonging to the Republic. River Reserves are rivers and “rivulets” and adjacent areas listed in Schedule A to this Act. The Minister may, from time to time, add to or withdraw from the Schedule any watercourse.

This Act grants powers to the Minister to constitute Forest Reserves and lays down rules relative to acts in or in relation with such reserve. The Minister may constitute a Forest Reserve by Order published in the Official Gazette and may also direct, in the same manner, the cessation of a Reserve. Provisions of the State Lands and River Reserves Act notwithstanding, the President or the government may not sell, lease or mortgage land in Forest Reserves. Cutting down of trees or lighting of fires without a written permission of the Chief Agricultural Officer is prohibited.

This Act aims at promoting soil conservation, preventing and mitigating soil erosion, and preventing damage by floods.As provided for in the Act, the Board may recommend to the Minister what lands, whether Crown or private, should be reserved as soil conservation reserves. The Board shall control and manage the soil conservation reserves in order to best conserve the soil of the reserve and prevent injury to other land, and may grant licences to occupy the reserve for pastoral or mining purposes or for the purpose of cutting, felling, and removing timber or flax.

The present Act implements the Conservation Districts Act (C-175). In particular, it refers to section 3 dealing with the Conservation Districts Commission.Subject to the approval of the Commission are: a) drainage improvement, development and maintenance; b) flood control; c) soil conservation; d) water conservation; e) recreation development; and f) such other programmes of resource conservation and development as the board may deem. The text consists of 20 sections.

Ministerial Decree No. 910 validating Regulation on land of protected areas.

The Ministerial Decree establishes that classification of land as protected area shall be the competence of the Government. Land use planning project with a view of land classification as protected area at the local level shall be submitted for approval to the territorial environmental, agricultural and land institutions. Expropriation of the plots of land destined for the annexation to protected areas shall be carried out in accordance with the land legislation. Land reservation for protected areas shall be carried out in accordance with the decision by the head of local administration.
