Dans toutes les villes en Afrique se sont développés des modes spécifiques de transport qui jouent un rôle fondamental dans la redistribution des produits alimentaires intermarchéss et dans l’approvisionnement de tout le secteur informel marchand. Ces modes de transport non mécanisés ou mécanisés offrent un service parfaitement adapté aux petits volumes traités et aux capacités financières réduites des différents intervenants, grossistes comme détaillants. Ils jouent par conséquent un rôle essentiel dans le maintien de faibles coûts de redistribution intra-urbaine.

At the request and with the support of the Japanese Governament, FAO has compiled experiences of livestock keeping fom different parts of the world, categorized by production systems, to make it easier for interested people to select ideas for their own conditions. This document presents a sample of such technologies intended for livestock keeing in urban and peri-urban areas. It describes the livestock production system in traditional sectors and identifies constraints.

Escalating urban poverty levels in many developing countries and countries in transition have exacerbated the alarming status of food availability and accessibility. Poor urban consumers often reside in the most remote, deprived areas which tend to be eglected by local authorities. Their food security requires specific attention. The challenge is to improve food supply and distribution systems efficiency and dynamism. This should be achieved through effective, concerted and sustainable interventions.
