The year 2017 was an especially lethal one for activists from 22 countries, according to denunciations filed last year by the British organization Global Witness.

Research by ILC member Oxfam, and others such as the World Inequality Lab, shows that extreme inequality is rising – not falling – in most regions. Inequality is becoming one of the defining features of our economies and societies, and it increasingly shapes struggles for justice and human well-being. Struggles for land rights are no exception. In fact, land inequality is a fundamental reflection and a determinant of wider inequalities.

During the first week of June we held our very first Research Consortium Women’s Land Rights Grantee Workshop. Held in Geelong, in the state of Victoria in Australia, a representative from each grantee group, the submission reviewers, and representatives from Resource Equity met for three days to share, learn, and challenge each other on the draft research papers that have been produced under this grant.

Under the theme of “Rights-Led Transformation Toward Climate-Resilient Landscapes”, this iteration of the Global Landscapes Forum (GLF), taking place this coming June 22-23, will explore the essential contributions made by Indigenous Peoples and local communities, rural women and youth to the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the targets laid out in the Paris Agreement on climate change.

Insufficient data has been cited as a major hindrance to the realization of gender equality especially in land ownership.

According to UN Women statistics, 80% of the indicators for gender equality across SDGs are lacking data.

UN Women Chief Statistician Papa Seck says lack of political good will and technical challenges are to blame.

Like many other Aboriginal kids in 1938, Isabel Flick was denied an education because she was “too black” to be allowed into the segregated public school.

Her father, a returned serviceman, was disrespected by the nation he had fought for. She and her siblings faced the threat of being taken from their family. She was later called a “trouble maker” for demanding justice for Aboriginal women and children and Aboriginal rights to land.

What are the program objectives? 

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is funded by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) as commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) to organize support measures for the "Network of Excellence for Land Governance in Africa (NELGA)".

We need to frame policy that addresses the complex drivers of gendered vulnerabilities to climate change.

Women are often portrayed as suffering ‘victims’ inherently vulnerable to changing climatic conditions, or as the unrecognised ‘saviours’ of the planet upon whose shoulders lies the burden of responsibility in avoiding climate breakdown. 

Gender and Land Rights Phase II Project to highlight and support initiatives that enhance rural women’s participation in land related decisions has yielded results at Nanton in the Northern Region.

The project was executed by the Network for Women’s Rights (NETRIGHT) Ghana, in partnership with the Grassroots Sisterhood Foundation (GSF), a Northern Region based NGO.

It also aimed at strengthening rural women’s control over their livelihood options in the context of the increasing commercial pressure on land and natural resources in the country.

MONROVIA – Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI), a global non-governmental organization and its local partner, the National Housing Authority (NHA) have completed the first step in developing Voluntary Gender Responsive Relocation Policy Guidelines (VGRRPG) to provide a framework for planned voluntary processes, under the Cities Alliance led Liberia Country Program and supported by the University of East London.
