Under present and foreseeable economic and social trends in the Asia-Pacific region, can we achieve sustainable forest management and better realize the potential of forests and forestry to contribute to improved human well-being? 

This brief discusses how gender perspectives are being integrated in Indonesia's forest policies, laws and regulations in terms of women's representation, participation, access and decision-making in forest use and management. The brief also highlights the key challenges that prevail and outlines recommendations to promote gender mainstreaming further in forestry.

REDD+ scheme is primarily aimed at national governments and local forest managers to reduce emissions by conserving forests; at the same time, increasing investment on capacity developmen for grassroots stakeholders who are the main forest stewards provides opportunities for the grassroots actors to enhance their understanding and skills on REDD+ and be the voices of their community to safeguard their interest and benefits.

This report was developed as a part of the regional initiative, ‘Mainstreaming gender into forest policies of developing Asia-Pacific Forestry Commission (APFC) member countries,’ funded by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations’ Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (FAO-RAP). The report tries to understand how gender perspectives are being integrated in the forest policies of eight APFC member countries.

RECOFTC’s Grassroots Capacity Building for REDD+ project in Lao PDR is launching five new posters on gender mainstreaming in climate change (CC) and sustainable forest management (SFM). The posters are produced in Lao language and serve as a tool for local facilitators in their activities to raise awareness and generate discussions among local communities on these issues.  

This presentation highlights the key outcomes for Phase I and II and looks ahead towards the objectives and expected outcomes of Phase III of the Norad supported Grassroots Capacity Building for REDD+ in Asia project.

To accompany the training video (available here) produced by USAID-funded programs GREEN Mekong and USAID LEAF Asia, a discussion guide is now available for trainers and grassroots facilitators to delve deeper into the gender aspect of social equity in terms of forest-based climate change initiatives, including REDD+. The questions in the guide will help facilitate discussions concerning forest management practices and forest governance in the local and institutional contexts.

This training manual has thus been developed to enhance the knowledge and skills in gender mainstreaming, including gender analysis and the integration of the findings from the analysis into the design of forestry interventions. This manual is particularly relevant for forestry-related interventions and practices that seek to promote participation and reduce the inequality that exists between forestdependent women and men, especially among marginalized people living in rural areas.

This two-part infographic explains the importance of social equity in forests and the basics on putting it into practice. The infographic defines equity and provides an easy to understand overview of the key elements that will empower forest-dependent communities. Through understanding equity, forest communities will better understand their rights and be prepared to participate in the decision-making process so they gain a fair share of benefits from forest resources.
