KLA undertook a study to highlight the impacts and emerging hidden dimensions of the COVID-19 pandemic on Women in the artisanal mining sector across the Country. From the in depth analysis, it is evident that the pandemic disproportionately affected at least 28 percent of women who depend on small scale mining for their livelihood.

A myriad of Non-Governmental Institutions that form the land Sector Non-State Actors (LSNSA) have collaboratively developed an advocacy strategy to guide various engagements initiatives in the advocacy of the implementation of the Community Land Act,2016.

Advocacy planning is a step-by-step process of analysis and debate that leads to the creation of an advocacy strategy plan and its implementation. The advocacy toolbox guides researchers and activists to walk through steps in identifying and analyzing needs, structural constraints and strategies specific to locale and context. The process includes assistance in evaluating objectives and assessing the impact of interventions. It furthers effective policy proposals, possible solutions and systemic change.

The Constitution of Kenya (2010) has provided the means for confronting new challenges to evictions and access to justice faced by vulnerable groups such as the residents of Mukuru. New jurisprudence has begun to emerge, addressing the human rights implications of evictions. Project researchers along with the Katiba Institute and Strathmore University’s School of Law work closely with the community to investigate different existing tenure arrangements in Mukuru to determine how the Constitution and land laws can be used to address challenges related to insecure land tenure.

The aim was to analyze the obstacles to, and opportunities for women’s access to land, with emphasis on the identification of more effective strategies in improving the security of women’s land rights. This report is a programme evaluation including lessons learned. Case studies drawn from the advocacy project are attached as Annexes.

In recent decades, global social and economic development has resulted in substantial land-use transitions. This was first observed with respect to losses of forested land, attracting worldwide concern. Forest transitions have an important impact on global ecology, whilst farmland transitions are key in terms of global food security. However, research into farmland transitions is lacking, particularly with respect to mechanistic analysis.
