The objective of this workshop was to deep dive into a collaborative approach to identifying potential solutions, consider the role of key ecosystem stakeholders including the banks, policy makers and IITA/AICCRA and prioritise wish list items for potential action. The conclusions reached provide a framing and context for next steps of stakeholder engagement in the third and final workshop for this phase of work.

Agroecology is gaining ground as a movement, science, and set of practices designed to advance a food systems transformation which subverts the patterns of farmer exploitation currently entrenched in dominant agricultural models. In order for agroecology to achieve its espoused twin aims of social and ecological wellbeing, women and other historically marginalized stakeholders must be empowered and centered as the movement's protagonists.

This paper develops a new framework to measure and track women’s empowerment in governance of countries’ agrifood systems. All too often, women’s needs, priorities, and voices are missing from the policy process, even when women may be disproportionately affected by shocks or have distinct policy preferences. The Women’s Empowerment in Agrifood Systems Governance (WEAGov) is an assessment framework to help countries and stakeholders measure the extent of inclusion and leadership of women in agrifood systems governance and to identify gaps and opportunities for improvement.

The International Institute of Rural Reconstruction (IIRR) in collaboration with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), developed discussion briefs that would further enhance the knowledge of ClimBeR’s stakeholders on resilience, inclusiveness and women empowerment in climate change adaptation in the Philippines. This brief discusses social equity in the context of adaptive social protection.

Gender differences and gender inequalities in rights, status and responsibilities significantly shape daily rural life and life cycles in rural West Africa (Levasseur 2003), where women face significant constraints in participating in activities aimed at restoring forests and farmland. Yet, they also find innovative ways to overcome such constraints, such as collective action and the creation of groups of mutual support.

Climate change adaptation is dependent on access to a number of resources, including information, land, financing, and mobility. Successful climate change adaptation, therefore, will need to integrate an understanding of gender and take action on it, including an appreciation for the importance of women in climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies. This paper undertakes a review of the policies and legal frameworks for gender and climate change, including key UNFCCC decisions on gender and climate change and gender mainstreaming in National Adaptation Planning process.
