Agroforestry systems and tree cover on agricultural land make an important contribution to climate change mitigation, but are not systematically accounted for in either global carbon budgets or national carbon accounting. This paper assesses the role of trees on agricultural land and their significance for carbon sequestration at a global level, along with recent change trends. Remote sensing data show that in 2010, 43% of all agricultural land globally had at least 10% tree cover and that this has increased by 2% over the previous ten years.

VFI has been working in Cambodia for 7 years now. Our ECOSORN Project aims to provide water supply and sanitation facilities, and to improve sustainability by introducing appropriate technologies for villagers. 



We operate this project in 3 provinces, 14 districts, 36 communes, 78 villages in the most remote parts of Battambang, Banteay Meanchey and Siem Reap Provinces. Our project goal is to build 6,000 latrines; 110 water wells; 1,000 water storage jars; and 5 large ponds

Village Focus helps families in rural villages in Laos and Cambodia. Dependent on the natural abundance of the wilderness around them for all things, they are often victims of profiteering in many forms. This publication is a lobby material to advocate the passage of the National Land Use Act (NLUA). It highlights the ambiguous land policies and processes as factors to the degradation of watershed and protected areas in Cagayan de Oro and Northern Mindanao Region of the Philippines, resulting to extreme typhoon disasters. The writer – Carmina Flores-Obanil – describes that from 1982 to 1997 massive land conversions in the urban fringes of Bulacan and Cavite attribute to policies encouraging the expansion of industries in rural areas.

Shared Assets works with landowners and social and community enterprises to develop innovative ways of managing land for the common good, be it parks, farmland, woodlands, waterways, or other spaces. We also look for ways to create an environment that allows these models to thrive. One issue that comes up repeatedly is the crucial role of local authorities, both as landowners and commissioners of land-based services.

This report explores some of the key issues to consider when supporting new land-based social enterprises. The findings are drawn from interviews with 13 representatives from social enterprises who received direct technical, business and training support from Shared Assets between 2013-15.
